I teach 3rd grade in Maryland in a community where my students need to be continuously challenged. They are faced with a rigorous curriculum that often leaves them tired but not satisfied academically. I teach all subjects and it is my goal to make learning fun again but bring concepts to life and creating meaningful experiences for my students.

In addition to teaching the basic curriculum, reading, writing, math...etc, I wanted to give my students an opportunity to think outside of the box and learn by doing. I started a class newspaper last year that was a big hit at the school. Students interviewed other teachers, visited classrooms, created games and puzzles, and reported on school events. Students in all grades were reading the newspaper, but the students in my class were frustrated because they thought it could be better. So, this year, we are adding a photography element to the paper. We would like to take pictures of students and teachers, things going on around the playground, and the beauty that nature has to offer!

Unfortunately the only camera we have to use is my personal camera. I would like to have more cameras for my students to use so they can express themselves both in writing and visually. There is a teacher that I am working with that has offered to help students learn how to use the camera and how to take great pictures. The digital cameras will also be used in other aspects of my instruction. My students can use them as a tool to illustrate their writing, or to take pictures of examples of polygons in the community for math. They will be used across the curriculum to allow my students to make connections between real life and the concepts they are learning in my classroom.
