Student Artists Are Sketchy Characters

My 5th grade Art students need 110 sketchbooks.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have 4 wonderful classes of 5th grade - mostly Hispanic - Student Artists. They come from all over Latin America and the Caribbean - Cuba, Columbia, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Ecuador, Mexico, and many other counties. Some speak little English when they get here, but they learn English and assimilate quickly. They are cooperative and well-behaved and want to learn!

Our budget was slashed this year - things are tough here in Florida - and we are operating on a bare minimum. I am purchasing a lot of materials myself, though I can't afford to get the things I would like. We have a high-quality program, including Art Terms and information about Artists, our own Annual Art Show featuring hundreds of pieces, and we participate in local and national contests and have had winners. I have built an Art Library over the years and a collection of posters of famous artworks. I believe the 5th graders (my oldest students) would feel like real artists if they could each have their own sketchbooks. Some could afford to get one, but some can't, and there is no money in the budget for extras like this. If they had sketchbooks they could draw quietly for the fist few minutes of every class and also use them for taking notes on class terms and artists. If they finish a project early they could again use their sketchbook. They could complete drawings at home, or sketch ideas for future projects in it. I know a teacher at a more prosperous school who has sketchbooks, and the students really benefit from them and take them seriously.

If each of my 5th graders (my oldest students) could have his own sketchbook he could take more pride in his work and use it for design ideas, to explore solutions to creative projects, to take notes of terms and facts discussed during class, and to brainstorm and create during opening and closing minutes of class. Every professional artist has his own sketchbook and I believe it would enable these students to take their work more seriously and increase their self-esteem and love for art.

You can make it possible for students - regardless of how long they have been in America and how much English they speak - to communicate through their Art and feel proud of what they create. By providing them with these sketchbooks, you turn a child into an Artist, and give him a chance to draw his dreams and fantasies, to feel proud of his work and himself. You give him a space to express himself and a visual record of his world.
