Although I've taught for five years already, this is my first year in an inner-city high school in New York state. I teach Spanish in a department with over two hundred students, many of whom come from homes with high poverty levels. The school I work at has an arts and media focus, and every teacher, no matter what the subject, is encouraged to incorporate the arts and media into their curriculum.

The kids here have signed up to come to this school, so they have an interest in media. The only problem is that it's costly to outfit every classroom with the technology needed to bring art and media to life. Many of my students feel like they've done more than enough by simply showing up to school. Asking them to stay focused, complete work, and even follow oral instructions is a daily challenge. On top of all that, I'm their third Spanish teacher in two years. Our school is small, and I was hired to be the only Spanish teacher. Their first teacher last year quit in December, and then they had a sub for the rest of the year. These kids feel that they've been given up on twice, and that Spanish, especially, isn't a subject to take seriously.

At the beginning of the school year, I noticed right away that these students need every advantage they can be given. Traditional lessons of note-taking and teacher-centered activities just don't work here. So the first week of school, I purchased a digital projector with my own money, and have already seen kids responding in tremendously positive ways. Now I need your help to provide an Elmo presenter for them. Many of these kids are used to having a lot of visuals in front of them. You can tell them how to conjugate a verb, you can show them the formula on the chalkboard, but without the concrete example that looks just like the paper or book on their desk, it's tough for them to make the connection. An ELMO projector allows you to take opaque images (like a page from a magazine, or the liner of a CD) and project it in color on a screen for the whole class to see. Having a giant visual to show them what I mean would help me get the lesson across to all the students.

Your donation will ensure that my students have a fighting chance at learning. Many of them come from a background of domestic insecurity and social promotion from one grade to the next. The problems are myriad, but with your donation, you will join me in the fight to hook my kids on learning.
