I have the great fortune to teach amazing second graders at a magnet school in an urban setting. As with many magnet schools, our population is wonderfully diverse. Our class has many students with identified needs and our ELL population is rapidly growing.

Our school and the district are committed to technology; the decades old school has recently gone wireless. Unfortunately, resources are extremely limited at my current school. My students have one functioning computer, an eMac. In my last school, all classroom teachers had 4 new Dells, a smart board and teachers had laptops. Having worked with technology, I keenly understand what educational opportunities my students are missing out on.

I am collaborating with parents, PTA, local business and universities to secure the basic technology resources my kids deserve. I have personally purchased a digital camera and video camera for my students. I am determined to find the resources and your generous support for a LCD projector would allow my kids to review science experiments, collect data, make movies, create charts, publish public service announcement, present puppet plays to younger students, create market research projects, review video clips from United Streaming, produce documentaries and publish books. Our young chemists have been conducting experiments on chemical and physical reactions. We will use the LCD projector at our community Science Day Extravaganza. Our writers are producing a play about the character trait responsibility. The projector will allow us to show our DVD to whole classes. We are collecting data about weather conditions. The projector will allow me to teach kids how to make charts in excel. Our school focus this year is on the community. Kids are taking photographs of their family field trips in our community. During school wide presentations, we can share our respect for our community.

For too many of my students, their educational opportunities are directly linked to their school. Due to your generosity, my kids will have a resource that will allow me to differentiate and respect multiple intelligences. Your gift will give my students the ability to let their ideas shine. The title of the grant is Let Us Shine. If you have ever seen a child truly understand a complex concept or beam with pride having accomplished a worthwhile goal, you understand what I am truly asking for. This tool, while expensive, will help so many children for years to come. Your generosity will inspire me to do even more on behalf of my students. Please give my kids the opportunity to shine.
