My Students' Text Books are Older Than Their Teacher! Help!

My students need thirty new grammar textbooks.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Would you want to learn out of a grammar textbook that was older than your English teacher? I think not. My ninth grade students in New Jersey wish they did not have to!

It's not easy being a freshman at the particular junior-senior high school where I teach. Their lockers are in the basement, yet all of their classes are two floors upstairs! Of course, the locker issue cannot be alleviated, but once the students arrive at their classroom, one would think that it would be smooth sailing from there, assuming they made it from the basement all the way to the second floor on time! However, that is not the case. Many of their classes--including the English class that I teach--are overcrowded, with thirty students stuffed into a room that could comfortably fit approximately twenty. Just today were all of my students able to sit in a desk; up until this point, I was anywhere between one and five desks short. Another issue, alleviated! However, I have encountered an issue that is too big for the department, the administration, or the me to handle at the moment. Presently, the students in class-many of whom are not native English speakers---are learning from grammar textbooks that were published in 1984, making them one year older than their English teacher (me), which I think is preposterous!

I KNOW my students want to learn; last year, as eighth graders, they were without an English teacher for much of the year. When I was arrived in March, they were thrilled to finally have a teacher and be able to learn something. Nothing is different this year. Some new faces and a larger, more challenging class, but I know they still want to learn. I feel that in order to properly teach them I need thirty recently published grammar textbooks. It's very hard to teach grammar when students are missing pages of textbooks, or the staples they had to use to put their book back together are pinching into their fingers. Simply put, new grammar textbooks will help this year's ninth grade class better learn grammar from now until June. Additionally, it will also help the future ninth grade classes.

Your assistance in purchasing new textbooks for us will make a world of difference. Presently, my students are being sent a message--that somehow, they have been forgotten. Yet, they have not. I haven't forgotten about them, because I know they need to and want to learn, and I know you know this too! Please help us!
