M.O.S.T. (More Opportunities For Student Training)

My Special Needs students are trying to open an Office Center where they will need a shredder to contract jobs from local offices to shred their files, a DVD/VCR combo recorder so they can take VHS tapes and burn them onto DVDs, and a scanner so they can scan customer pictures and burn them onto a CD.

Mrs. D. Pennsbury High School West
Fairless Hls., PA Grades 9-12

I teach high school Life Skills Students, all of my students are mentally disabled, some are both mentally and physically disabled. We have created a new program called the M.O.S.T., which stands for More Opportunities for Student Training. This program provides training in areas that can help the students secure a job once they graduate, so they can become a contributing member of society.

Our 18-21 year old students functioning level ranges from non-reading/non-verbal students to students who can read at a 4th grade level. In training the students on various tasks, we have found that shredding is a terrific job for our students, one in which they can do and enjoy. We have used our own money to purchase shredders from yard sales, etc. but they burn out too quickly. We need an industrial shredder to really train the students properly. Right now, two students have been placed in offices using large shredders, but the training was difficult because we do not have anything like that at school. The DVD/VCR combo recorder and scanner are just too expensive for us to put money out of pocket and our district does not have money in the budget for such items. They could provide great training for the students to learn how to operate and incorporate technology into their instruction.

Many companies hire people or contract out shredding jobs. These are jobs that the special needs population can succeed at. Even the lowest functioning students would be able to earn money transferring VHS tapes to DVD, and scan pictures into a computer. The higher functioning students could then format them onto a CD. These skills can all be transferred to paying jobs upon graduation.

With your help, our students can receive training in areas in which they can transfer their talents out into the workforce. Our goal is to provide special needs students not only with training, but with the confidence to work out in the community, though without equipment and technology we are very limited in what we can teach them. Special needs workers have a lot to offer, we just need to find their interests and develop their skills.
