My students live in a high needs/low income community that lacks the inspiration I strive to give them.

Most of my students are living in projects and tenements, receive free lunch, and lack basic supplies. Many live in foster homes or come from broken homes. Despite that, they work very hard to please me and flourish when their creativity is tapped. They love to read because it introduces them to new worlds and also lets them escape their own problems at the same time. Most read below grade level but love to read anyway. They like to meet at the back of the room, sit on the floor and read both independently and together, but we have no rug in our classroom. The school only provides them for Kindergarten through 3rd grade but suggests all grades use them. The kids really need a place in their classroom to be comfortable and read since it's a basic task that can't be completed at home for many of them.

If the children have a rug to read on they will flock to it. It promotes a fun and safe learning environment. It provides an inspiration they lack at times.

Your donation will help inspire dozens of children. Reading opens up a whole new world to them. Even though they are fifth graders, they have so little knowledge of what the world has to offer them. Rug center time and rug reading time breeds comfort and safety and encourages curiosity and growth through literature. Your donation will open that door to them.
