I teach at an outstanding school where parents do all that they can, but to be honest, our parents are tapped out. They donate all the time to so many wonderful causes but this time I am reaching out to the community, and even more tragic is that our district cut our budget by 20%. We can barely afford paper much less novels.

Each year it seems to get harder and harder to get children excited about reading. Less than a 3rd did summer reading even with incentives they did not choose to read. Reading seems to the last thing on their lists.

So, we have decided to take time out of each ELA class and have them stop and read for 10-20 minutes a day. We don't want that time spent going to and from the library so we decided to try and get our own personal libraries that contain high interest current novels. This way they can read after a test or check out novels any time they wish. I am asking for thirty novels from Barnes and Noble. Each of these novels are high interest and should tempt both males and females. Although 30 novels will not get me very far, it will be a start of my own library that I can continue to add to each year. That is a class set, which hopefully show them that reading can be just as fun if not more fun than a WII.

Please help me encourage our students to read. To them reading happens when they are looking at their friends' blogs. They do not realize the world books can offer. Make this a reality. Children do not want to only read the classics. There is a whole world waiting for them. Please show them someone cares.
