Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My kids are starving for technology! I teach 28 7-year-olds in a 2nd grade classroom. We live in a high-minority, low-income school district in Colorado. Some of my kids are homeless and have never had access to any type of technology.

We are an International Baccalaureate School and we teach different units throughout the year about different cultures, countries and traditions. We focus on developing the individual talents of children and teaching them to relate the experiences of the classroom to the realities they will face in the 21st century. Because of this mission, we utilize technology daily in our lesson plans. We show movies, blogs, clips, etc. about different countries and we need a laptop in order to store all that information and show it as a whole class.

Our current unit, "Education Around the World" focuses on the value of education in different countries. If we had a classroom laptop computer, we could see actual blogs and pictures of different schools around the world. Our children will finally be able to be part of the technology that is sweeping the world now: many of them have never even been exposed to the internet. Instead of them all crowding around my one computer to read and respond to world-wide issues and blogs, we will be able to use the laptop to project the images and sounds onto our whiteboard so everyone can enjoy and get the full experience from them.

Your help will make it possible for my children to experience technology as a class. You will make it possible for them to feel connected to the citizens of the world. Our kids have experienced many hardships throughout their lives and this will help to have one more positive reason that school is a good place. It will also help to close the achievement gap for low-income students.
