My students need 30 copies of the book, "The Secret Life of Bees".

Teaching tenth grade English in a high poverty city school where supplies are scarce and class sets of books are next to impossible to obtain.

No Books! I know it is hard to believe, but believe it. I do not have class sets of novels that are interesting and new for my students to read and enjoy. I would like to offer an opportunity for the entire class to read the same novel to broaden their interests in reading.

"The Secret Life of Bees" is a great novel to read in the tenth grade and introduce students to an interdisciplinary study. Unfortunately, due to financial district restraints, our students' reading materials are very outdated. By having a book for every student in the classroom, each student can participate in and out of school readings. Having a new book in their hands will motivate them to want to read more. Using this particular book, students can engage in group work, in-depth class discussions,Internet blogs,and critical essay writing based on the concepts presented in the novel. Every child should have the opportunity to read a novel and it would be great for my students to feel excited about reading. I believe a new book in their hands will do just that.

After reading the "The Secret Life of Bees" by Sue Monk Kidd over the summer, I was inspired to teach this novel to my 10th grade English Language Arts class. Unfortunately, our budget will not allow me to purchase enough books for each student in the class. In order for our students to be given the chance to read novels, we depend on the generosity of donors like you. Our school has been aiming to teach writing pieces that can be used for interdisciplinary lessons and I felt that "The Secret Life of Bees" would be an excellent novel to use because of its connection to the civil rights movement. Even more importantly, the connection to the historical presidental election and the 2008 election. Making a real-world connection with the novel content will empower my students to think and analyze critically while gaining a more through understanding of American history. Please make a difference for my students.
