"My classroom is a picture of true America. My students bring diversity of all sorts (gender, race, socioeconomic status, language) to create a challenging but strong community. I teach 7th Grade Core which means I get to spend half of my day with the same 30 students (a gift, trust me) teaching them writing, literature, social studies, and basically how to be better human beings. We are a high poverty & high pride school.
Our district doesn't have a lot of money (or if we do I'm not sure where it is going). Our library has a few new titles, but most of the books on the shelves are "old," "boring," and falling apart. I have a small classroom library but nothing that can fully support what we are attempting to do as a class: fall in love with reading.
I am trying to build a Lit Circle friendly library. This would be a library that has at least 4 sets of high quality Young Adult Titles that students can read in small groups and then discuss and write about. Lit Circles are AMAZING. Students really feel empowered when they get to choose their own books and they really look forward to talking about what they've read with their small group. This program looses its effectiveness when they've read everything I have. The titles on this list are ones specifically requested and recommended by my male students. These are books young men connect with and want to read. I have another list on Donors Choose for the young women in my class.
You will make it possible for my students to continue to develop their love of reading. This increases their literacy, self-confidence, and eventual ability to be critical thinkers and productive, active, participants in our world.
My students need 4 copies of 4 highly popular titles, including "Monster" and "Al Capone Does My Shirts".

Dear Cash4Books.net, Jim and Linda, Mrs F, Allison and Artbeats,
Thank you very much for your generous donation to my class and my project "Best Books for Young Men." Earlier in the year the students created several book sets to ask for. We agreed to start with this one and one for the young ladies in class. I am happy to inform you that two weeks ago the other project was funded. The boys have been feeling a little envious and I CANNOT wait to inform them that somebody out there filled their request for books. This means a great deal to us. On behalf of my entire class, I'd like to extend a heartfelt and sincere "thank you."
-Mr. F.
On Dec 23, 2008, Mr. F. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
Reviewed the project essay and sent follow-up questions if needed.

"I grew up in Oregon and reading was my favorite part of school. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! "

"My teachers and family filled me with an enduring love of reading. It expanded my horizons, inspired my imagination, and satisfies at least of my desire for adventure - if only vicariously. I hope it can do the same for you."
"We gave to this project because we support what our teachers are doing and feel that sometimes projects cannot be done within the school system itself. Thanks to our great teachers for the efforts they give to our children."
