Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a suburban South Florida middle school. Nearly 40% of students are on free or reduced lunch. We serve ESE students, SB (severe behavior) students, high functioning autistic students, ESOL students (English as a second language) as well as regular ed and advanced students. My classroom of 137 draws from the entire school population: ESE, SB, ESOL, Advanced/Gifted and regular ed.

Imagine teaching classes with 25 or more students and only 3 computers. Computers aide in writing and composition. The bulk of content in middle school Language Arts is writing. Just like riding a bike, students must practice, practice, practice to become perfect. One of the contributing factors to students receiving low scores on FCAT Writes is poor word choice. Students will use words like big, good, little and happy instead of enormous, fantastic, minuscule or elated.

This project utilizes a Franklin handheld dictionary and thesaurus. With this little handheld device, students literally have the answers in the palm of their hand! This device will improve spelling and vocabulary skills. This handheld dictionary also includes SAT games and can save word lists that the teacher creates. The homophone guide helps students distinguish between words.

Students are constantly working on electronic devices. Since we can’t do all our work in a word processing program, having these electronic dictionaries will help spark students’ love of writing. Students will want to write and spell large words if they can check their work with this cool little tool! The devices can be used again and again in multiple applications from writing, spelling, grammar, word choice, prefixes and suffixes, etc.
