Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach second grade in a high-poverty area. In addition, my school is in its fifth year of Program Improvement, and on the verge of being taken over by the State due to its low scores.

Many of the students in my class are struggling with reading. More than half of my students are reading below grade level. Many reasons contribute to their low ability in reading. One of those reasons is due to their language ability as 90% of my students are English learners. Many of these students have a hard time listening to what they are reading, due to differences in language phonology. This creates an obstacle for them to read fluently.

Using the requested resource, the WhisperPhones, will enable the students to hear what they read, and provide auditory feedback. The WhisperPhones will also allow them to increase their fluency and comprehension as they can hear themselves read the words. Its shape and look will also increase their motivation to read, as the WhisperPhones look very "cool" and resembles real phones adults use in real life.

Your contribution will play a a big part in my students' success in reading. You will help increase their motivation in reading, which then encourage them to be more knowledgeable and become a better contributors of society.
