FEED THEIR NEED TO READ!(please) I am a sixth grade teacher in a small district. Our school is located in a New Jersey community that is considered to be moderately impoverished. My classroom serves general education and special education students.

Previous teaching experiences have shown me that access to great books is incredibly important in improving literacy. Students in wealthier communities typically have great libraries in their towns, schools, classrooms, and homes. Students in my town have fewer books in all of these areas, and as a teacher, I believe it is my job to help close this gap as much as possible. The place where I have greatest control over this; my own classroom, of course. As a book lover, I am trying hard to bring my love of books to my students. I want them to be able to find a safe "escape" in a good book. I want them to find joy in reading. We have just finished our first full week of school, and I am happy to report that many of my kids are excited about reading. They are asking me to get more books for the class library. I don't have enough copies of the books that the kids are clamoring for!

In order to feed their need to read, the resources that I am asking for are books for the class library. These are all books, authors, and series of books that the kids are excited about. Some of these include classics like NANCY DREW, others are modern novels, destined to be classics, like CITY OF EMBER. In my class, both the boys and the girls are unable to put down Dan Gutman's baseball books, which bring some of baseball's greatest players to life! Having access to more books can only improve the literacy levels of my students. These aren't kids whose parents can afford to spend hundreds of dollars on book orders. In addition to the academic benefits, the students will experience the joys of great books. Hopefully, these books will inspire these kids to become life long readers!

Your help will make it possible for my students to have something extremely valuable to their futures in their classroom; great books. This is a project that will continue to give the joy of reading for years to come. My students are already "paying it forward" by lending their own books to one another and even by donating them to our classroom when they have finished them! Thank you for giving these great kids the opportunity to develop something so valuable; a love for books.
