I am blessed to be teaching 4th grade to a group of amazing students in a rural school. Unfortunately, we are not blessed with funding that allows teachers to spend money on items that would benefit all student learning. Let's call our budget a hot-dog budget in a steak world.

This year alone, I have spent over $200 of my own cash trying to make my classroom a place of hands-on, child centered learning. In a perfect world, I would just continue to purchase the things my students need to be successful but my personal finances will not allow for that. Currently, we have absolutely no games/activities that work on literacy skills or practice reading. We are in high need for "practices" that reinforce curriculum taught that go beyond worksheets and class discussions. As a teacher, it's my mission to expose kids to reading in a variety of educational and fun formats. My current options are certainly limited like trying to make a fancy dinner out of cheap hot-dogs!

Some of the resources I need are education games that work on comprehension, cause/effect and inference. I also request materials that allow students to practice reading fluently--in a skit format--which makes it exciting for the students. Also, I've found an awesome "reading" beach-ball that you can gently toss around and answer comprehension questions that are printed on the ball. Now we're talking some quality meat! The resources I'm requesting are a variety of reading levels which will allow all readers (whether considered high, medium or low) to play games to practice skills taught in reading. Most classrooms have a variety of student reading levels and mine is no exception. These games would allow ALL readers at ALL levels to be included in a fun way to practice reading.

By supporting this project you'd be giving the gift of decadence to my reading class! No one adult, child or in-between should be stuck in a hot dog rut. We all like variety in our experiences and that is what I want to provide to my deserving students. Throw out the ketchup kiddos---you're getting a thick, juicy T-bone today!
