Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The fifth grade students in my classroom learn and work together in a New York Public Elementary School. Our classroom is full of energy due to the bright, energetic, and hardworking students that enter the classroom each day ready to learn. Although my students are extremely diligent and hardworking, many of them struggle with reading and become frustrated during independent reading time. In our classroom, we follow the Reading Workshop Model to assist them with reading comprehension through different reading experiences. To make these reading and learning experiences even more valuable, I would like to incorporate some high interest, reading-level appropriate reading passages and activities that will target the reading comprehension strategies students are struggling with. One of the most important aspects of Reading Workshop that I utilize in the classroom to build on my students' reading abilities is shared reading. During shared reading, the whole class comes together to share a reading experience. The reading experience usually consists of a high interest, short reading passage that the students can make connection to and that targets a specific reading skills the students are struggling with. The reading passage is shared with the whole class utilizing the overhead or a copy is given to each child. During shared reading, students have the opportunity to "turn and talk" with a partner and share ideas and connections with the whole group. Shared Reading is an important component of our reading program because students practice both comprehension and fluency skills. In order to make our shared reading session more valuable, I would like to incorporate some more reading selections into our program. With so many children reading on different levels, it is difficult to acquire reading selections that will not only interest each student, but be appropriate for their reading level. I am requesting both fiction and non-fiction reading passages to accommodate the different interests of my students. The reading selections I am requesting come as both overhead transparencies and a set of books that can be reproduced so students can have individual copies. The different books are mostly collections of short stories and high interest articles. All of the short stories and articles, which include child-friendly vocabulary and fascinating, corresponding pictures, focus on different areas of comprehension including identifying the main idea, making inferences and conclusions, comparing and contrasting, understanding cause & effect, and identifying story elements. I would also like to incorporate a context clues game into the Reading Workshop to allow the students to have additional opportunities to practice reading skills in a fun way. I believe that having these new books would be extremely beneficial for all of my students. The books can work as another scaffolding tool in our classroom, which will not only increase my students' reading ability, but also their reading confidence. It is important to incorporate different genres and reading experiences in a classroom to reach the diverse learning needs of the students. I am hoping that if I can expand my library, I can also expand my students' love for reading and build on their strengths. If I can continue to cultivate my students’ interest in reading and help them to grow as readers, than these shared reading books will be an invaluable asset to our classroom.
