My fourth graders and I have been fortunate to have the usage of a laptop and projector that I received through an HP grant. The 32 kids and I enjoy being able to use technology in our classroom and extend it into other activities.

While we have a projector, often times there are difficulties for students to demonstrate to their peers and myself their understanding of a particular concept as they would have to type out their sharing on the laptop. Also, many times I will have to locate a scanner to scan in handouts that are not already saved on the computer. This is all a time-consuming process that takes away from the learning experience.

With the document camera, I will be able to share genuine student work immediately without the need of making extra copies. This will lend itself to a more interactive environment where students are also aware that they will be held accountable for all they do. I plan to use this when we are working on math and writing. To have the document camera available would allow me to take a student's math journal that they worked on individually and immediately project their work without having to waste time copying their steps again. This would keep my students accountable of their work. Often times when we share our writing, we can only share orally. It would aid students who are visual learners to have the document camera automatically projecting what they have written already. From there, we can directly use student samples to edit and revise. There will be no lag time between making copies of their papers and showing on an overhead what changes need to be done to it.

Your help will enable my students to see how the usage of certain technologies are tools in their learning path. Many of them will be involved in occupations in the future requiring them to be aware of the technology tools out there. This would help keep them on their toes and eliminate the need for excess papers being copied.
