Mr. S. North Street Elementary School
Geneva, NY Grades 3-5

I work with third, fourth, and fifth graders who are learning English as a Second Language. More than 90 percent come from low income homes. North Street school serves a high-needs community of learners who may never have access to computer technology if the school doesn't provide it. The Hispanic/Latino group continues to trail in State-Wide testing results. My goal is to help change this and deliver lessons which incorporate computer technology and motivate these students to walk across that stage and graduate to a great future.

What is at stake? My students will have access to the "brains" of my own personal computer... Perhaps down the road I will have enough points to request another monitor-maybe computer- but for now having a wireless mouse, extra keyboard, and three sweet Nanos will allow me to teach the students how to access my computer's possibilities while greatly improving their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. My program is currently underfunded for these materials. Fund me and you will be funding the children whose parents work hard in our nation's fields and orchards. Many of them don't even have the foggiest idea what a Mac is except perhaps the one they pick from a tree!! Every day, they hope their children will go places they never had the opportunity to go in their lives. Fund me and I will show you what a passionate educator can do when he himself is motivated and passionate about the difference he can make. Fund me and you will hear the voice of the end user like never before. Trust me to succeed with my students for I touch the future!!!

By having these materials, students can utilize my computer for presentations, write stories, make movies, do slide shows and many, many other things. They will have access to my Mac laptop computer software programs such as Pages, Keynote and many others. The mouse will also allow many hands to have access to the technology. Neither I nor my school currently have enough funds to purchase a Mac computer for our work so I am using my personal computer with these requested externals to gain access to this motivating and easy to use technology. Together we will create podcasts for lessons and presentations, and many other uses too. The sky will be the limit and hopefully we will discover new ideas to help these students find the motivation to greatly improve their content area knowledge and English language proficiency. I can just see it now! Can you too?!
