Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This proposal would support 8th graders at a high-poverty neighborhood school in a violent urban center.

The school has a packed bilingual program designed to transition English Language Learners (a very large portion of our student body) into English-only classrooms. Unfortunately, the school has been failing for 8 years, so virtually none of my students are able to read or write on grade level (in either Spanish or English). It is my first year here, and I have made it my mission to use their speaking strengths in my Spanish classroom to develop their phonetic-text connections and flip their attitude toward literacy (and themselves) in a more positive direction. Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to get basic supplies such as copy paper and enough seats for every student, and extremely beneficial, but more expensive, teaching methods are not even on the radar.

By incorporating this novel into a future unit, students will receive a significant amount of instruction and practice on "reading for information"- a failing component of district- and state-wide benchmark exams. They will also be able to hear (through my reading and the audio CD) different pronunciations other than the very informal slang that they receive at home and in the neighborhood. As we move through the unit, they will be given the opportunity to read aloud as well, boosting their self-esteem and presentation skills. "La Casa en Mango Street" is a great classic that is very relatable to these 8th graders, which is critical in altering their extremely negative attitude toward literacy and reading in general, a very common trend among urban young in this generation.

You can have a profound impact on the self-esteem, attitude toward literacy, and development of a critical job skill (ability to read/write Spanish - not just speak slang) for 29 of the most high-risk students in this urban center. In a school that has failed them for years, this is the last opportunity to change course before they get lost in high school- both academically and behavior/socially.
