The Lost Boys Connection

My students need 35 copies of "What is the What".

Grades 9-12

New York City Harlem students at a high school level need to connect to the world! Currently, students from diverse African American and Latino cultures only have access to European literature. 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students with and without learning disabilities are exploring text to make world connections and need high quality, modern text. Because we are a title one school, students do not have the resources to supplement our book room and we need your help. My students want to read a text that is modern and relevant to their experiences and need copies of "What is the What". As you might have heard, The Lost Boys were children traveling from Sudan through three countries losing thousands along the way, looking for safety from civil war. With your donations, students will experience the challenges that face not only themselves, but others in their world. Using 35 copies of What is the What, students will study geography, expand cultural knowledge, and participate in programs within their community that support refugees. Students within 10th, 11th and 12th grade will experience the pain, triumph and accomplishment that the Lost Boys experienced through a literacy lens. These lessons will be structured around NYC standards and will teach skills of point of view, tolerance, memoirs, and primary/secondary sources. Please help my students experience new text and important lessons learned from "What is the What".
