My students need 25 popular English titles, translated to Spanish, including the "Harry Potter" series, "Hatchet", "Little Women" and "The Outsiders".

I am an English as a Second Language teacher, teaching 6th-8th grade students. Our Middle school, has a growing Hispanic population of wide ranging literacy and English skills.

My students' literacy skills often atrophy while they are learning English. In order to learn to read and analyze, they need to keep reading grade level material, but they often can not because they can't read that level material in English. Instead they are stuck with books that are more appropriate for 1st graders, which not only does not engage their imagination but also embarrasses them in front of their classmates when they bring such a book for Silent Reading Time. I have exactly two Spanish language novels in my classroom library, including a Harry Potter book. Both are now almost falling apart from having been read so often!

Research shows that, the better their general reading skills are, the better their English reading skills will be. In order to assist those students who have the lowest general literacy skills (my Hispanic students), I need to increase the number of Spanish language novels in my classroom library. Not only will students have the opportunity to read a fun, appropriate book that is exactly what their peers are reading but it will improve their ability to participate in the wider school community. Our school has a system for reading books and taking quizzes on them, but many of my students have difficulty reading the books that they can choose from. Having a Spanish version available will allow them to read and understand the books they need to read for the quizzes. Finally, it will allow students to participate in literature groups with their peers as they can read the same book in their native language as well as in English.

By investing in this project you will make it possible for my students to become more active and interested in school and reading. You will allow them to participate more fully in the larger school community and keep their imaginations alive and growing while they develop their English language skills.
