I am the only special education teacher in my school. Several students remain in my room all day long, and the rest are resource students. Although I currently serve 10 students with varying abilities, that number is likely to grow as more students are identified or move-in from surrounding zones with schools that are being closed.

All of my students are differently-abled, but the common link between all of them is that they read below grade level. The oft-quoted No Child Left Behind Act aims to move each student to grade level proficiency in reading. The path toward success is one of many obstacles for differently-abled students. Because my students struggle to read, they not only struggle with the reading/language arts curriculum but with other curriculum areas such as social studies and science.

In every student's IEP, there is an objective to increase the student's fluency. In addition to traditional assessments such as keeping running records, I have also begun to use Photo Story as a means to motivate students to read with more fluency and Kidspiration to develop writing skills. Each week, students record themselves reading a passage, or short story that has been practiced in class and at home over the course of a week. Students also use Kidspiration to create a writing extension project. By the end of the year, students will have read at least five passages of text in each genre of literature that is appropriate for their grade and ability level. My students are excited to hear themselves read over moving pictures and like to view other students' projects, as well as their own in their free time.

Your donation will not only give my students the opportunity to see themselves video-taped, but allow them to see their own progress. Through your donation, not only will they have the opportunity to critique their own reading, but understand how non-verbal language plays a part in the audience understanding of what is read by watching themselves on video. Students will also be able to create cds of readings in particular genres that they can use for home practice and viewing.
