Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 4th year 1st grade teacher in a high poverty area. My class of 22 students contains students with IEPs, English Language Learners, as well as students with very difficult home lives.

My students have little to no support at home. I play teacher, mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle, etc to my 22 students each day. I have the very difficult, yet highly rewarding, task of teaching these young students to read and write. Since many of my students come from single parent households, they are often at home after school attempting to do homework without support or supervision. This makes my task even more challenging as each day requires a great deal of review before we can move forward.

It has been found that students learn best with hands on approaches to new information. These materials would benefit my students greatly in that they will have a greater understanding of new material. It will no longer be "drill & kill lessons" which do little for retention of information. These hands on lessons will assist my students in comprehending the lesson, thus cutting back on the amount of review necessary each day. Less review means more teaching time. Within my district, we have limited resources. At times, I feel my students are getting a bad hand and are not provided the same opportunities since we are all aware that money and materials do not grow on trees.

By funding this project, you will make it possible for my students to have more hands on approaches to learning that are often available to schools with more funds and resources. You will also help them to believe in the good in people and assist in teaching them the life lesson of giving back and providing for those that are less fortunate.
