My students need 20 calculators and a calculator caddy to calculate the amount of money they have earned as a positive reinforcement.

I am a special education teacher, currently teaching fourth and fifth grade students with learning disabilities (language arts and math).

The students in my class earn (fake) money as a reward. This is very motivating and helps to keep them focused and on task. It also helps them to become accountable for balancing their money. What a great experience that they will need for their future. Students need to keep track of how much money they have earned during each week. Money can be earned for completing assignments and homework, staying on task and following directions. At the end of each week, students calculate the amount of money they have earned and place it in their "bank account." At the end of a semester, students are able to use their "bank account" to write a Check and purchase items. Students are so excited to earn money and be able to purchase items because of their achievements.

On the actual purchase day, my students sometimes get a little overwhelmed and have trouble computing their money.

Since this needs to be a positive experience, allowing them to use calculators will definitely take the stress off of spending their "well earned" money. Calculators will really help them to figure out, if they have enough, and how much change they get back so they can continue to shop.
