Bring Beowulf Alive Through Graphic Arts!

My 10th grade Honors students need 30 copies of Gareth Hinds' graphic novel of Beowulf. His version of Beowulf was self published and uses a verse translation by Francis Gummere. My students will have the opportunity to compare the translation with the classic translation by Burton Raffel, learn visual analysis, and try their hand at a graphic novel of their own. We hope to work on a larger grant and convince Gareth Hinds to come to Virginia next year! (We think big!)

Glory, Blood, and Revenge. Beowulf has it all. Help me bring this heroic saga to life for my tenth grade Honors students and truly illustrate the Hero's Journey for them with Gareth Hind's masterful graphic novel "Beowulf". My students are visual and will respond to his art while learning to compare and contrast different versions of the verse.

The sagging economy has hit hard- no money to buy new books for this classroom. This teacher's salary is tapped out! Help me bring some fabulous materials that grab kids interest to the classroom.

We need 30 copies of Gareth Hinds' Graphic Novel "The Collected Beowulf" by Candlewick Press. We'd also like 30 copies of his self published work for an alternate translation. Students will learn to analyze visual art, compare and contrast different styles of prose (comparing this with the classic Burton Raffel translation) and create their own graphic novels. Students will also learn the Hero's Journey and apply it to Beowulf during this unit.

Help my students make the connection between an art form they love and this classic tale. Show them how they can make a difference when they make graphic novels for the middle school!
