Lights, Camera, Microphones! Making Movies in the Classroom

Ask a middle schooler what they would like to be when they grow up, and chances are good that their answer will involve entertainment. Acting in or directing movies, playing professional sports, singing - these are the dreams of many of my students. I teach 7th grade science in a diverse middle school in North Carolina. Our school serves a high-needs community, with high percentages of special needs and ESL students relative to other schools in our district.

To get students involved with interesting technology, and to incorporate their love for all things entertainment, my students will be creating their very own digital movies this year as the culminating project in a 9-week exploration of fruit fly genetics. They will get to write, direct, produce, and star in these short films, which will chronicle three generations of flies. We have the computers and the time - what's missing are the microphones necessary for these students to narrate their videos!

My students need 10 headset microphones so that they can record their video narration without background noise while working in our school's computer lab. After seeing a "preview of coming attractions" for science class that I created using the same movie software, the students are all very excited about this project and can't wait to exercise their movie muscles!
