I teach fourth, fifth and sixth grade instrumental music at a small rural school. The students improve so much during this time and it makes my job very rewarding. I strongly encourage music literacy from the beginning. My students read, perform and listen to a variety of music.

I encourage the bands to actively listen to each other and themselves. The problem is that band students inherently hear only themselves or their section. They need to be able to hear the entire band as the audience would. I would like to be able to record the band and play it back for them. This is a great way for students of all ages to engage in their own musical learning.

I would like to purchase a small digital recording device to record rehearsals and concerts to play back for my students. Listening is such an important teaching tool in music and I have not been able to produce a worthy recording using the current equipment. The school owns some quality microphones but they still yield horrendous results if they are used with a cassette recorder that is twice as old as the students. The digital device would also be shared with the chorus and possibly utilized for other events.

Students listen to crystal clear music with devices smaller than a credit card. Why should they come to school and associate learning with outdated oversized equipment that sounds terrible? Please help my band hear themselves clearly.
