Can't Go Out After Dark, The Mockingbird Still Gets Killed!

My students need 30 copies of To Kill a Mockingbird, the audio book, the poster, and the teacher guide.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Every time one of my students leave their home they take their life in their hands. This is the truth. If they go 5 miles down the road, and a gang-banger asks them where they are from, they could be shot in the back. This just happened again in August to a young man who was in no way gang affiliated. His life was merely an initiation for a boy to join a gang. The killer was probably joining the gang to save his own life because he too is afraid to be out there alone. This life is my students' reality, right now, today. The whole gang, bully, fear generating mentality is nothing new. I truly believe that by helping my students to think critically about prejudice, and to understand perspectives, they will be able to make decisions in their futures that will lift them out of old thinking perspectives, and strive for success, as well as peace in their own lives, neighborhoods, and communities.

My district is subject to budget cuts again this year. I believe that given the opportunity to use the novel To Kill a Mockingbird will help the students develop a better understanding of how prejudice, hate, and fear are that which ruins lives.

Many of my 8th grade honors students were previously English Language Learners. The audio set of the novel, along with the classroom set of novels will allow students to better comprehend the more difficult events in the book (courtroom language for example). I have some lessons of my own that I want to implement for the book, but I believe that having the teacher's guide will enhance the whole experience for the kids. My students are Honors students, however at my school that usually means they are at grade level. I try to keep high expectations for their achievement, scaffolding lessons when needed. This has been successful for all the other grade levels I have taught. This is my first year with 8th grade, but I'm excited because they will also be learning about America in their history classes. For that reason, and also that this is an election year, possibly like no other in American history, I felt like one of my favorite books of all time To Kill a Mockingbird was fitting.

Only with generous help, like donors from this site will it possible to add this great novel to the lives of my students. It is possible that they will get a chance to read it in high school, however some of these kids won't be in high school long for one reason or another. I hope you will help them with the opportunity to learn from Harper Lee's words, through the characters of Scout, Atticus, Jem, and Dill in the great novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Thank you very much for your time.
