Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I am a special education teacher in an inner city district. In my classroom there are 15 wonderful boys and girls who love listening to stories and participating during reading.

My students love hearing stories. Everyday children listen to stories that I read to them. I have one storytelling kit that I use while reading to my students. My students become so excited when I take out the story kit because to them the storytelling kit bring the story to life. I see how involved and enthusiastic they become during story time. The children help me read the story by placing the cloth characters on the storytelling board. I would love for the storytelling kits to become part of my classroom so the children can help me read the many stories using the kits and not just the one I have.

Storytelling as a learning tool encourages students to explore their own individual expressiveness and heightens their ability to communicate their thoughts and feelings. Many of today's children watch too much TV and play too many video games. Their world becomes fast paced and media driven. My goal is to help remind my students that their spoken words are powerful and that listening and communicating with people is very important. I believe that the storytelling kits can help me achieve that goal. I want my student to read and to enjoy every word written. Most of my students do not get read to at home so it is up to me to instill the love for reading in them.

By funding this project you will help my students bring the stories that they love so much to life. They will feel self confidence when they are telling the story and be able to retell the story by themselves using these storytelling kits. The students will be able to develop oral language skills which will help them communicate with people. All of my students want to be storytellers!
