New Books for 6th Graders Who Deserve the Best

My students need 25 copies of the book, "The Five People You Meet in Heaven."

My 6th grade reading students are from a high-need community and include struggling readers, special education students, as well as English as Second Language Learners. Such a diverse group of readers need books that can capture their interest and lend for amazing discussion potentials for all.

Teaching only reading has given me a rare opportunity many teachers do not have. I pride myself on being able to steer my class based on intellectual discussion, stimulating debate, and expanding students' perspectives on the world. Unfortunately, working in a high-poverty school setting, the resources and supplies other schools have to help push their students forward are not available to my students. Having heard from many other teachers who work at schools outside of high-poverty communities, I have become aware of many novels and texts that middle school students truly enjoy and love. After asking my students to complete an interest survey based on summaries and descriptions of these books, a resounding amount of students expressed interest in "The Five People You Meet in Heaven."

By receiving a classroom set of "The Five People You Meet in Heaven," my students will be able to explore intellectually the same content, the same material, and the same literary experiences as other students across the country. It is truly unfair that any student should not be able to read any text they want simply because of the school they attend. By reading a contemporary novel such as Mitch Albom's, my students will be able to truly expand their minds in ways they weren't able to before.

Your help will ensure that my students are given the same opportunities as all other students in reading classes. You will make it possible for my students to make amazing connections to a text that they, under normal circumstances, would never be able to come in contact with. My students deserve the best opportunities and the best literature to work with. Your help truly will make a difference for my students.
