Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach ESL at a "second chance" high school in New York City. Most of my students are refugees from the civil unrest in Colombia. They came here as teenagers, and many of them fell behind as they struggled to learn grade-level content in a new language.
Still, at our school, they are getting another chance to meet the requirements for a high school diploma in the U.S. - and you can help them do it.
We're scheduled to read "The Odyssey" this year -- a challenging book for even native speakers. But for my ESL students, it will be an odyssey for them to struggle through the cumbersome translation our school currently uses -- one fraught with frustration and unpleasantness for all involved!
But there is a solution. "The Odyssey: a Dramatic Retelling of Homer's Epic" presents the story as a play that we can act out in class. This version will be challenging -- but it presents this classic story in a way that my ESL students can still read and understand. Even better, because it is a play, my students will be able to practice their speaking and reading skills.
The Odyssey is an amazing story with something for all teenagers to love. Fierce battles, horrific creatures, lovers struggling to be reunited, and a teenager's own struggle to find himself despite an absent father and a mother distracted by the idiocy of her own romantic prospects.
