¡Sí Se Puede (Read En Español)!

My students need a classroom library so that they will develop a love for reading and for Spanish.

¡Sí se puede leer en español! That is the message I want my students to have. As a language academy, our school's mission is to develop students' interest and competence in other languages. Students take Spanish three to four times per week.

As a K-2 school, literacy is paramount. In order to build a program that develops not only listening and speaking skills in Spanish, but also reading and writing, my classroom needs to have a variety of books, just as a regular classroom would. As a new school, however, we are just beginning the process of building up such resources for students. This can take time, but students deserve to have the resources they need, regardless of when they attend the school.

By reaching out to others interested in Spanish or in literacy, I hope to more quickly begin my classroom library and get students reading in Spanish. Motivation plays a large role in reading; my students will benefit from being able to choose books that suit their interests. Learning to love books in any language is the greatest gift, and one that will benefit students for a long time to come in any subject they take. In addition, having a variety of books also means that students are being exposed more quickly to a larger Spanish vocabulary than they might from textbooks or classroom lessons alone. As you might remember from taking a foreign language class yourself, the class becomes interesting and motivating when you can begin to express your ideas and thoughts. Having more exposure to a greater variety of words will help students feel empowered not only to read, but also to speak and write, in Spanish.

By donating to a classroom library, your gift will be long-lasting and wide-reaching, as the many students of Spanish over the next years will read and enjoy these books. You will make it possible for my students to learn the joy of reading in any language. More specifically, you will enable students to practice their reading skills in Spanish and empower them to think sí se puede...¡leer en español!
