Teacher! My Desk Just Broke Apart...Can I Have Another One?

I am a 4th grade teacher for children who have had to have a lot of "hand me down" desks. Yes...we are thankful to have the desks for my students, however, what do you do when a desk falls apart right before your very eyes, while the student is holding the pieces?

What is it like to have a new student from another city and his/her desk is missing part of the upper back or a desk is marked all over and gum stuck on the bottom? My students and I make the best of what we have. We clean them and add plastic milk crates from the lunch room when they get rid of them. We put them beside the desks and put the rest of our books and supplies in them. I use the crates myself so the students know that I am just like they are. I put my books and papers in them too. This delights the students because they always ask if I need more crates.

It would be so nice to be able to give the students a new desk that is not broken, without a back, no gum stuck on the bottom, and a flat surface so their books will not fall off every time they get up. I know that desks are costly, but the children are worth it! The benefit would be ownership which is empowerment for the student. Imagine a new desk, all mine in my own space, reading and writing without distractions. Wow!

I did not realize children were so needy for their own desk and a good one at that. I went to private school and had the the best of everything. When my student held part of her desk that broke apart in her hands, she kindly told me what happened and asked if I had another desk for her. God love her....so humble and sweet. Maybe her wish will come true! Thank you for reading this. Have a great year!
