...Houston We Have a Problem. No Telescope for 3rd Grade

My students need a telescope for sky gazing during an upcoming space unit.

Einstein was given a simple compass at the age of four and science was changed forever. There is no telling what one hands-on experience with a scientific tool can do for a child's future. I am hoping a telescope will generate the same scientific awakening for my students that the compass did for Einstein, the greatest thinker of all time. I teach 3rd grade at an ethnically and socio-economically diverse charter school. It is our school’s goal to provide students with opportunities to apply what they have learned in the classroom to meaningful and practical situations. It's been said that the mind remembers what the hands do. I want students to leave my class with significant experiences that will foster an enduring love for learning.

No matter how hard a teacher tries to bring the curriculum to life, without certain tools, children seem to lose interest. This couldn't be truer for space units. Although captivating to some, myself included, space can be a nearly impossible subject for certain students to grasp. Without a concrete example or empirical evidence, the facts have no real life meaning or significance. That being said, if something has no significance, why should students bother learning about it?

My vision is a perfect solution to the aforementioned problem. Close your eyes and imagine this scene. It's about 7:00 P.M and the full moon is just starting to rise. Families are sitting on blankets with baskets of food on the soccer field at school. Then, after dinner and some activities, I pull out a brand new telescope. I tell the students that we are going to turn book learning and abstract ideas into a fantastic, real life stargazing. We will look at the full, bright moon through the telescope and finally see the surface with our own tools rather than a textbook's interpretation. Students will gain empowerment by being able to show their families what they have been learning in class. They can impress their parents with their knowledge of space and become the family expert in astronomy.

You will be able to help my students feel this empowerment. They will gain experiential learning that they will undoubtedly remember for a lifetime. Your help could cultivate a love for science in a future Nobel Prize winner. Remember, all Einstein needed to start was a simple compass, imagine what a telescope could do!
