Help My Eagles Soar!

My students need 30 copies of "5 Steps to a 5: Writing the AP English Essay".

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are high level critical thinkers, but they need help putting their ideas in writing. In addition to my five other classes, I currently teach AP Literature and Composition to 30 spirited high school juniors. Our school is a college prep charter school serving at risk and inner city students, most of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch prices. Our student population is approximately 60% Latino/Hispanic and 40% African American. Many of our students will also be the first in their family to attend college.

Each of my AP students wishes to compete with students from across the country for admission to top tiered universities. Unfortunately, due to their educational backgrounds, many of my students are playing catch-up with their writing skills. My students are highly motivated to improve their skills; however, both the school and students' families lack the resources to provide our students with individual study guides, writing workbooks, or private tutors that AP students in other communities can afford.

With a class set of "5 Steps to a 5: Writing the AP English Essay," my students would have a resource that provides practice sets, writing tips, and daily exercises that would help improve their writing. This same set of books would also be available for our 12th grade Language and Composition students to use. With just this one addition to our AP curriculum, we would be providing these students with a more comprehensive writing program and students would be better prepared to succeed in college level courses.

Despite the hard work of teachers, families, and the students themselves, if our students aren't afforded the same resources as other students in neighboring communities, they will not be prepared to compete successfully at the college level. With your help in the purchasing of study guides, my students will be one step closer to obtaining the writing skills expected of college students.
