Things Are Falling Apart!

I need sixty copies of Chinua Achebe's canonical masterpiece, "Things Fall Apart," in order to be able to teach it to my 10th grade class this fall.

I have developed a curriculum that progresses by using "Things Fall Apart" as the foundational piece of study. The unit focuses on the premise of understanding cultural relativism in conjunction with the emotional evolution of a tragic hero. The purpose of this unit is to allow students to explore the relationship of human beings with each other and their environments across the globe and across time in order to gain persepective on the human condition beyond their own ethnocentric perceptions. While moving through the text, the students will work in intensive research groups, which will allow them to explore the realities of Nigerian culture. Furthermore, this research project will help them redefine the concept of research as something more than a "Google search" on the internet. They will conduct pertinent, text-based research using note cards, they write annotated bibliographies, they will write comprehensive outlines of their ideas, and then they will write a series of paper drafts that will ultimately be presented to the class as a means to broaden the base of the whole class' understanding. This close textual reading and research project is imperative to the progression of my curriculum, because the research skills the students learn through integration with the text will be used to scaffold larger and even more ambitious reading-oriented projects thereafter in my sequence. My school lost considerable funding as a result of horrific budget cuts in education. Hence, the English department was unable to order enough books to satisfy the needs of the student population at the school. Please stop "things from falling apart," and help me regain control of my curriculum in order to educate my students and engage them in a vigorous and exciting course of study.
