Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a first year teacher at a Title 1 School, I am desperately trying to create a positive learning environment for my incoming kindergarteners. I am transforming a second grade classroom into a kindergarten environment. I am excited about my first year teaching, and I know that I have the power to make a true difference this year.

My incoming students come from a variety of backgrounds and I will be teaching half of the class how to read, speak and write the English Language. In order to meet the needs of all of my students, I need to concentrate on universal access work stations in order to provide differentiated instruction throughout the day.

The four listening center activity kits that I have chosen for this project provide independent activities (in a variety of levels) for my students to participate in that will help increase their speaking, reading and writing skills. In order to meet the needs of all of my students, I need to concentrate on universal access work stations in order to provide differentiated instruction throughout the day. The first three concentrate on phonemic awareness (the sounds that we hear in different words). The fourth activity kit reviews basic sight words with the students. Up to eight students can participate in each center at one time, which will facilitate learning for my students during our universal access workstation time. This proposal also includes the actual listening center (CD Player and Headphones), as well as a set of books for the students to enjoy at the center. The set includes four copies of four different books. The audio book builds listening and fluency skills by modeling fluency and expression, while the print helps the student associate the words they hear with the text on the page.

You will make it possible for my students to enjoy reading and writing, excel in school, develop meaningful relationships with their peers, and exceed the CA Language Arts Kindergarten standards. This foundation will not only provide success next year, but throughout their academic careers.
