Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a class of 3, 4, and 5 year old preschool students. Some of us are deaf and hard of hearing and use sign language to communicate. Others of us are at school to receive some early speech intervention before we go to Kindergarten. My class is in an all early childhood special education building. We focus on the specific needs of preschool students. I have the only class of deaf and hard of hearing preschoolers in the district.
An important part of the preschool day is Circle Time. Circle Time occurs at the beginning and end of every preschool session. Circle Time is full of learning experiences such as calendar, weather, question of the week, letter of the week, counting, reading stories, and participating in fingerplays. Currently, during Circle Time, my students sit on the standard carpet that is in every classroom with their symbols taped to the floor so they know where to sit.
A new learning rug at Circle Time will provide my students with another learning experience at this critical time. Not only will it liven up the classroom with primary colors to make it more child friendly, but it will also give them more chances to learn. The rug can be used to practice the alphabet when I assign seating, "___, sit on the Y" or "____, find the letter that makes the 'bu' sound". The individual squares on the rug are perfect for preschoolers to sit and have their own space. The rug will also be used during centers time when students choose to read books and relax on the carpet. They will not only be reading books, but also learning as they look at the letter-sound connections made on the carpet (A for apple). My students will be thrilled with the new carpet and will be even more excited about learning!
Your help will ensure that my students not only have a comfortable and exciting place to sit during Circle Time, but also that they will have another chance to learn the letters of the alphabet and make important letter-sound connections before Kindergarten. My students and I are very grateful for your support.
