I teach Forensic Science and Biology in Alaska, and I love it! I serve a huge variety of students, and while most seem to enjoy required classes like Biology, I have never garnered such excitement as when we first offered Forensic Science as a course this year.

Although we have hit the ground running and the students are learning more every day, I fear that a lack of resources will lead to a less than fulfilling experience for some students. While textbooks are useful, ultimately the students I work with need something more. They have been captivated by such shows as Bones and CSI, and now I have the opportunity to harness that interest and turn it into a significant learning experience.

Thankfully, I have managed to cobble together some lab supplies to engage in hands-on experimentation. The real hook for my students, though, are the real-life stories of forensic science in action. I've seen many previously unmotivated students suddenly excited to delve into the depths of the most complicated scientific topics when it is connected to their interests. That is where the book "Stiff: the Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" comes in. Using this book frequently for case studies in forensic pathology, students will engage their imagination and intellect in the topic at hand. Equal parts educational, hysterical, and intriguing, this book is sure to capture the minds of my eager students.

Ultimately, the two things most lacking in many science classes are captivating examples of science in action and the support of reading skill development. By supporting this project, you will reach teens who are eager to learn yet need a spark to start that initial fire. You will also help students reconnect with the joy of reading, as this book is very difficult to put down. The very topic of Forensic Science caused enough interest to pack my classes on day one, but with your help we can turn this trickle of curiosity into a flood of knowledge. (As a side note, I am requesting hard cover books so that they can be used for many years. The shelf-life of paperbacks is very short for books used by high school students. Since I am a young teacher, these books may potentially be used for 20 years or longer.)
