Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Humanities at a high-need, small alternative high school for 16 - 21 year olds who have not succeeded in a traditional high school setting. Much of my job entails rallying student interest in reading and learning. Students rise to the occasion when we have a high interest topic, and from past experience I know that, "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier" is a gripping and educational book that both boys and girls love. This semester, students will study the history of imperialism and its long term impact. My aim is to help students see history and world events as lived experiences and I need quality fiction and non-fiction available to make this happen. Students will research current conflicts that are a direct result of the aftermath of imperialism, such as civil wars in Africa and other countries. This memoir teaches students the impact of war on young people in a powerful and compelling voice.

The majority of students in my school are reluctant readers, but all of them will rise to the occasion with the right reading experience. It is a constant struggle to bring in quality, high interest literature that is pertinent to the subject we are studying. This memoir meets my needs and the needs of my students in that it is well-written as well as compelling and informative. Reluctant readers can only resist this book for so long, because news of this story leaks out into the hallways and students from other classes come looking for it. It is a teacher's dream.

With a class set of this memoir, I can help a class of students have an enjoyable reading experience. For many of them, it will be a first. Many of my students admit to never having finished a book. This becomes a serious barrier when students take the state-mandated English Language Arts Regents exam and are asked to write an essay on two pieces of literature that they know well. Students will also benefit from having the experience of participating in a community of readers, as they share this reading experience on a formal as well as an informal basis. Students will engage in "book talk" and "active listening" spontaneously, and in the process, become better readers.

I hope that we can make this proposal a reality. My students will greatly benefit not only by succeeding on their state exams, but in their development as readers and thinkers. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal.
