A Drive to Learn

My students need 28 flash drives, one for each computer in the lab, in order to save their digital imaging work. Drives will be assigned to computers so that students in different classes will share drives.

It's never too early to incorporate technology into the classroom! I am an elementary school art teacher serving 340 students in a socioeconomically challenged public school district, with more than 95% of students qualifying for a free or reduced-price lunch. I believe that understanding and using technology is vital to the success of my students. This year I am introducing digital imaging and photography into the curriculum in order to expand understanding of the role that technology plays in our lives and to present career opportunities for my students.

With the generous support of our principal, we were able to purchase copies of Adobe Photoshop Elements as well as digital cameras for the computers in our lab. However, due to the nature of the administrative settings on the student computers, student work will be erased upon every restart. We need a way to save student work so that they may revisit projects and print photographs that they have manipulated, as well as continue to work on long-term projects such as the school yearbook.

In order to solve this issue, each student computer will need to have a flash drive that is portable. Students will be able to open up their previous files from the drive and continue to work and resave them. They will be able to access work in order to print copies of it, and will also be able to upload image files from other sources to incorporate into their work. Groups of students will also be able to share files for group projects. The drives will become the property of the computer lab so that all 20 teachers in the school are able to use them to store student work.
