I teach at a public school. Our community is very diverse with many cultures represented. I teach kindergarten class that has many challenges in language, special needs, abilities and is very indicative of our social times. Many of my students are in a survival mode and I want to elevate their lives through meaningful education.

I am finding that my high students are at a first grade level to begin the year. My low students are not developmentally ready for kindergarten. Many have never experienced a classroom of any type prior to me. Of the twenty-one students in my class, four of these students are ESOL; two speak Spanish, one speaks Tag-a-log, and one speaks Albanian. I have two additional students that are fluent in English but their parents understand very little. I have two students from India. I have two Special Needs students that are both Autistic but somewhat different in the way it is displayed. One of the two has a seizure component to her affliction. Six of my students are in speech with four of those also being language impaired. Four students are experiencing parental divorce, two families are in foreclosure, with another two experiencing domestic violence. I am working to find a way to meet each child at their needs. I want to give them a strong foundation in reading and writing for which to build. We can learn anything once we learn to be strong readers.

I have completed a "Daily Five" book study and workshop. This is a detailed program, scientifically researched, that will allow me to work with students in very small groups and then individually, while keeping my other students focused and learning. It will allow me to teach and challenge at each child's learning level. However, I am in need a storage center in order to create book boxes and the materials needed to keep each student on task. This is a very structured system that will allow every student to excel. This center will allow materials to be set-up in a precise location, with book boxes set for each child at their level and writing that meets their need. I have two series, five copies of each, of pre-decodable, decodable and early readers that will make this center the cornerstone of our literacy program. Their down time and transition time will be cut to almost nothing and academic time greatly increased.

My students have so many challenges in their lives. My goal is to make their education challenging but not one of their "challenges". I am asking for you to partner with me in changing lives, in helping these children build a strong foundation in learning. Your gift will make it possible for my students to focus on their academics and lose the meaningless down time while waiting for materials and instructions.
