Mr. P.
Grades 6-8

Middle School students are parents too. As a school wide Graduation Coach responsible for creating the right stimulus to motivate students to perform well, I realize that the absent imprisoned father and the mother searching for a substitute while daddy is away is creating a subculture that is pathetic but almost necessary for survival. Education for students in this situation becomes secondary. Inclusion of students with special needs and students of mothers that were on crack while carrying their babies are awesome combinations in the classroom. The lack of stimulating role models and poverty makes it difficult for the child to transform into a student by the time he or she arrives to school. Middle School students are at a crossroads and they need positive people creating positive images in their lives to prevent them from going down the wrong road. Middle School students caring for their siblings is a norm.

It is difficult to give students a virtual tour outside of their norm without positive images and lessons of hope being presented in the form of an incentive. Students are inspired to perform when they are trading for something that they enjoy. Trading is a learned behavior being indirectly or directly taught by the mother who is naturally trying to keep her children out of the street. The mother occasionally has to auction her body to the highest bidder. This is a cultural influence that students openly talk about. The third generation absent father in this culture has made it difficult for the student to relate to the male and female teacher since the student is serving as the head of household. In some cases, the male student views prison as being inevitable and the girls view her body as a means to an end. Video creates images and opportunities that are not typically modeled in the impoverished community.

Video brings the outside world into the classroom and subsequently into the minds of students. Images mean everything when you are poor and without positive examples. This incentive will motivate students who can do better, to perform better. Poor students cannot afford to travel. Viewing educational shows within the home is not always an option. The young mother, her boyfriend, or the big brother is controlling the negative images of cable television. Lunch time, after school programs, and before school programs would be more appealing if we could utilize an LCD projector as an incentive.

It is so important for sponsors to be involved with students that are disadvantaged by situations out of their control. I attended a week long camp for youth with the HIV infection. It is amazing how much energy and courage these young children displayed. Regardless of their situations, they deserve a better life. I participated because this was my gift to them and I will continue to do more. Your contributions are awesome and our kids are grateful. Giving is a wonderful act of kindness and the children need us to be there while their parents are absent in their lives. God is good and we thank you for everything done in his spirit. My motto is, "Our Children are Minutes Away From Greatness", and we need to remain by their side every ticking moment of the day.
