Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help these students ignite their spark for reading. I teach a 9th grade intensive language arts class for students who aren't able to pass the FCAT. Most of these students are jaded and having a hard time seeing any reason why they should better their reading and writing skills. It's my job and yours to help them see that reading can be enjoyable.

These students hate reading. They are from the lowest socioeconomic area in our county and having a difficult time passing the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). They've grown accustomed to failure. With that failure, they've lost their desire to read.

We need to make reading a reward, something to look forward to. Right now we've got a cold and lonely reading corner where students sit in hard desks. We need a rug and colorful pillows to make this a more inviting area where students will want to hangout and be more likely to focus on reading.

Your donation will help me reach these children. You will make it possible for them to have a place to read, a place that's just for them, that's comfortable and inviting, like a good book. Although these students are forlorn with reading, I know that seeing their own reading area and knowing that strangers want to help them learn to love reading will inspire them. I'm sure, given their backgrounds that few people have singled them out for positive messages. I thank you on behalf of them for your caring and your donation. Thank you.
