Exploring Identity With The Tattooed Soldier

My students need 15 copies of the book "Tattooed Soldier" so that we can read it as a class, analyze its many themes, and discuss its social commentary of immigrant struggles and the Latino Diaspora.

Ms. E.
Grades 9-12

I was amazed when I realized that my Latino students knew next to nothing about the countries where their parents came from. I teach English language arts in South Central Los Angeles, an area of high poverty. While most of my students were raised here in the United States, their parents are immigrants from Central America. It surprised me greatly to find that although many of them speak Spanish and celebrate traditional cultural customs, very few of them know about the history and politics of their mother country. I proposed a Latin American Literature course as an elective for upperclassmen that would allow them to explore crucial periods of thought and action in their homelands. The book "Tattooed Soldier" nicely blends details of civil war and social revolution in Guatemala with the immigrant struggle in Los Angeles and also touches on universal themes such as order v. chaos, violence v. peace, and revenge.

This is the first time in the history of the school that a course in Latin American Literature has been offered: a fact that is surprising given that the students are overwhelmingly (75%) Latino. Because this is the first time the course is being offered, we currently have no books for it!

The answer is simple. Please help me buy 15 copies of the book. The rest is up to my class. They'll read it, discuss it, and most likely write a reflective essay connecting its themes to moments in their lives.

These students are hungry to learn! In other classes, they may read traditional literature; however, nothing is more empowering than discovering that "your" people have written great works of literature as well.
