Have you ever fallen in love with an author and couldn't wait to read his next book? Well, imagine eight year children in love with Chris Van Allburg's books and having to read old, tattered and worn out copies! As a teacher of third grade in a Title One school, replacing well loved books when they get read too often due to their popularity is not often easy. Our yearly author study of Chris Van Allsburg might not happen this year. Please help us!

The first time I read one of Chris Van Allsburg's books, I became hooked. The first time I read one to my third graders, they became hooked. They could never get enough of him. Therefore, these wonderful, hardcover books which I had bought for them to read became old and almost unreadable. As I prepare to begin my yearly author study on Chris Van Allsburg, it is all too clear that the time has come to replace them. Books have become very expensive and I no longer am able to purchase them on my own.

To properly replace and add to the Chris Van Allsburg collection in my classroom, I will need 2 hardcover copies of 16 titles. These books would be used as read alouds and as independent reading books for my third graders. These books have very interesting characters with very mysterious events happening throughout. I have used them to motivate my students to read more. His books are very helpful in teaching my students inference skills as well as inspiring them to write their own mysterious stories. Since some of his books have been made into movies, "The Polar Express", "Jumanji" and "Zathura", the children are familiar with his work and are excited to read more. They really seem to enjoy his writing and illustrations, since he does both.

Won't you please help replace the old collection of Chris Van Allsburg's books in our classroom with a new and even more exciting collection? You would be helping foster the love of reading and writing in our classroom for this year and many more years to come. Don't let the Chris Van Allburg author study end due to lack of funds.
