In a world filled with technological advances such as video games, digital T.V., and multipurpose cell phones, it is becoming a challenge to get students to read. Teaching freshman and senior level English has opened my eyes to the need for not just books, but other reading alternatives. Our high school has a student population that is considered in moderate poverty. Books and reading are not their top priority because they struggle to relate to how reading will relieve their current situation.

Requiring students to read four books a semester outside of class has been our solution to low reading scores on tests. However, books are limited, so the English department has given students the alternative of reading ten magazine articles. The library has a very limited supply of magazines, however.

Teachers and community members have begun donating magazines (and books) to try and help broaden the choices of the students. What we need now is somewhere to organize and display the magazines. Each English classroom would be better equipped to handle magazines with a wall mounted 20 pocket magazine rack. This display will hopefully interest students and make them more aware of the options available to them.

You will help make it possible for our high school's students to improve their reading skills and broaden their reading experiences. This will help students in many different aspects of their lives.
