Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a motivated front runner of the first all girls class in the elementary school setting in my county. I am looking for way to turn students into politically conscious adults. I am hoping to engage them in our world through current events and chapter books. In a society where the right to vote is not a big deal, The United States Constitution is just some document and the 5 o'clock news is just something for old folks.

I teach in a community/state where over 3 million people are not registered to vote. I would like to use Time for Kids magazine to usher my students into becoming politically involved adults. I have asked for the subscription for two years from my school and there is just no money to fund it. My students have recently been inquiring about Olympic events and the presidential candidates.

Time for Kids would really open up the door to a new world for my students outside of their present community. In a society that has gone back to neighborhood schools students in our community don't ever get to experience life through someone else's eyes. I could really use TFK in my classroom to motivate, captivate, and invigorate my students learning.

You will make it possible for the next Dana Torres or Barack Obama to realize their dreams. By allowing them to see and read about or wonderful United States of America and the world around them you will open the door of opportunity.
