Currently I teach a class of sixth grade students with learning disabilities at a large middle school in a small city of South Carolina. These students are in a self-contained setting, meaning that their learning disabilities necessitate a smaller class size, direct instruction, a modified curriculum, and an adjusted pace in order to acquire new skills and information. This school is located in a high-poverty area of the city. With statewide school budget cuts, our students especially are not getting the resources they need to access the regular education curriculum.

Although all of my students are in sixth grade, the reading assessments I have done show that they read on a range of second to fourth grade level. Not only is reading the words difficult, but comprehending what they read and what's read to them is extremely hard. Unfortunately, the classroom library I inherited with this classroom only takes up one shelf in the book case. Most books are old and tattered, and most books are written above my students' reading level. My students love reading, regardless of the challenges they face each time they open a book. The school library texts are also above their reading level, so even though the library has a large selection, it is limited for our boys and girls. These sixth graders desire to spend every free moment in the book nook, even if they just look at the pages and pretend to read. The only resources we have in class are clearly and boldly labeled as the grade level written (second, third, or fourth grade,) stripping away my students' confidence and decreasing that thirst for the knowledge that only books can bring.

We need a wide variety of books to both engage my students to read for enjoyment and to aid them in understanding the content I have to teach them on grade-level. This proposal requests chapter books for pleasure reading, books on concepts of math, science, and social studies, and short stories with comprehension questions- all on my students' reading level. The great thing about the high-interest/low readability books I have chosen is that they are clearly labeled as sixth grade material. Also, there are world history content books I can read aloud to them about loaded with pictures, maps, and diagrams so that the students can acquire skills and information that are difficult to grasp. Students will be able to choose from fiction or non-fiction selections, including mystery, comedy, biographical, fantasy, and poetic texts.

Instead they will see multiple shelves running over with books that they can actually read! Please give my students the opportunity to learn about themselves and the world around them through great literature.
