Hands on Feeding Relationships

My students need 45 owl pellets to analyze the feeding relationships between common rodents and owls.

Ms. M.
Grades 9-12

Please help my students take something simple like an owl pellet and use it to think outside of the box about information like feeding relationships and also predator-prey relationships that can be found between owls and their respective prey. I teach AP Environmental Science and my students are juniors and seniors. An owl pellet is a valuable resource that can be used to explore many different aspects of ecology. There are feeding relationships -(For example, which rodent did this owl prefer to eat?), energy flow - (Why did the owl pellet have two or three different skeletons within it?), and also can be used to interpret predator-prey relationships.

My students really enjoy doing hands on projects and labs because it helps bring the topic to life for them. With owl pellets, I like to explore the different aspects of information that you can determine or that you can infer from something an owl ate. I also feel that by having the owl pellet, the students seem to get a better grasp on the idea of energy flow within the ecosystem because the students can physically see multiple skeletons within a pellet. It is also interesting to compare the number of rodents and what type of rodents tend to be the favored meal of the owls who donated the pellets and to look at predator-prey relationships and also infer information about the population of the owls and rodents in the particular area from what is extracted out of the pellet.

For this opportunity to explore many different aspects of ecology with my students, I am going to need 45 owl pellets for my students. I feel like if you have much more than a 2-3 person group, some of the effect is lost because not everyone can be involved fairly equally. I feel like with this number of owl pellets I can provide an equal opportunity for my students to participate and look at the owl pellets up close and experience the feeding relationships, energy flow, and the predator-prey comparisons.

Sometimes I feel like some labs really don't reach the kids in the way that I would like them to, but with your help, having owl pellets to dissect would help my students realize that there are other feeding relationships in nature aside from humans and what we eat. I also think it would be nice to explore other energy transfer in nature instead of what is passed within humans. I still remember dissecting owl pellets from school and the discussions associated with it. Hopefully with your help, my students will be able to experience all the information that can be found from an owl pellet.
